Our little Shay is 1️⃣0️⃣ today! 🎂 I was determined to get a dog before my sophomore year of college and not just any dog, an Australian Shepherd, a highly intelligent, athletic dog. I was living in an apartment and was unwisely going to use most of my money I had saved up during my summer job on this dog. My mom didn’t care about the idea, but my grandma had lots of opinions on why it was a bad idea. Mama finally made Grandma realize that I was getting this dog despite her thoughts, and I have never ever had a moment of regret. Getting Shay in college was the best. We had so much time together to train and play. She & Carie forced us to go to the dog park and meet new people and to work out outside. They were full of energy and required a lot of our energy, in a good way. When we got horses our senior year, they fit right into that life because they were already made for the farm life. They have fit into every chapter of our lives beautifully. I may have had a few worries about what they’d be like with a baby and having to share us, but they were wasted worries. They fit right into this chapter too. We’ll have more dogs over the years, but they’ll never be like these two. It won’t be possible. They’ve grown up with us. Shay doesn’t look or act 10, thank God. She’s still my shadow and so intuitive to people’s emotions. She’s fiercely protective and perfectly mothering. She gets so excited for one on one adventures like when I sneak her away from the others and take her out back to the woods, just us. She’s amazing and a cornerstone in our little family.
